“AYS?!” is turning 3!

There’s a lot that goes into making Are You Syncopated?! happen, and we have so many ideas! This year we decided to focus the program on the essence of the festival. But we certainly don’t want to stop mixing things up and challenging ourselves by pushing the envelope on what SWINGING means. After all, we are in Berlin and we will uphold the reputation of this great city: wild and daring.

So what is this year going to be? 

We have another banger of a program this year, one that even the most swing purists will have to admit is worth a visit. Nick Rossi comes all the way from San Francisco with two sidemen and the support of other musicians from the scene to bring his Swing Six to shore. Another big focus of the festival will be the Syncopated Sisters All-Star Band led by Shannon Barnett and Marie-Anne Standaert. This constellation of women will swing hard, leading to a jam session with more jazz cats from the Syncopation Society. Two other bands will be upholding the hot jazz flag this year: the Rufus Temple Orchestra and the Tenement Jazz Band from Scotland! And we still have more surprise music acts to be announced…  

The Venues

We haven’t cut corners in the artistic department for this edition. We have only booked one night at the Säälchen this year (Saturday Night), while the other nights will take place at the Statthaus Böcklerpark. Of course, we are making sure that all the venues are easily accessible and fitting for all dancers and listeners.

Dance Workshops

We’ve invited really amazing dance teachers to offer a nice and round solo track where you’ll approach musicality in your dancing with Kelly Issac and Judith Novela & Sussekane from Mozambique. More info here!

Music Workshops

There will also be a music workshop led by some of our guest musicians: Nick Rossi, Kamrin Ortiz, Riley Baker, Marie-Anne Standaert and Shannon Barnett where you will learn a repertoire to perform during the festival. Only one band this year and applications are open!

Pricing

All the passes have gradual pricing starting at 60€ for the Party Pass, including totally fly dance taster classes (we should even find a new name for these, it will be epic!), community talks, parties and Jam sessions. And you can also write us to ask for the community fund which can lower the cost of your pass.

Die Syncopation Society präsentiert das “Are you syncopated?! – Berliner Jazz- und Swingtanzfestival.
 
Berlin, Deutschland – Die Syncopation Society kündigt die zweite Ausgabe ihres Festivals “Are You Syncopated?!” (27. Sept. – 01. Okt.) im Säälchen am Holzmarkt an. Das Festival feiert die Vielfalt und das Erbe von Jazz und Swing mit einem reichhaltigen Programm aus Musik, Tanz und Diskussionen.

Wie schon im letzten Jahr liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf politisch und historisch relevanten Vorträgen und Gesprächsrunden. Dabei geht es um den Umgang des Jazz als Afro-Amerikanische Kulturform, um den Einfluss von Rassismus und Sexismus auf die Entwicklung von Jazz oder um die Frage wie Wertschätzung von Schwarzer oder anderer Kulturen gelingen kann, ohne kulturelle Aneignung zu betreiben. 



Im Rahmen des Festivals findet auch das BERLIN HOT JAZZ CAMP, dh. Musikworkshops, mit mehreren Dozierenden der Syncopation Society statt, die sich dem frühen Jazz und der kollektiven Improvisation widmen.



Neu in diesem Jahr sind die Tanzworkshops, in denen die Teilnehmenden die Freude am Tanzen erlernen und teilen können, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf Musikalität und Ausdruck liegt. Gastdozent*innen wie Felipe Braga (Brasilien), Marie N’Diaye (France) und das Smile Trio (Mosambik) werden das Verständnis für Musik und Tanz bereichern.



Abends können die Teilnehmenden die pulsierende Energie der Berliner Musikszene bei Konzerten, Tanzpartys und Jam-Sessions erleben. Auf dem Programm stehen u.a Bands der Syncopation Society – Ragtime Nightmare, The Big Five, Kelvin Sholar Trio, die Jungle Jazz Band, das Syncopation Society Orchestra – sowie internationale Gäste wie die amerikanische Sängerin und Schauspielerin Nicolle Rochelle, der Pariser Saxophonist Olivier Franc und sein Sohn Jean-Baptiste Franc am Klavier. Ziel ist es, verschiedene Generationen, Tanz- und Musikszenen zusammenzubringen, die eine gemeinsame Leidenschaft für den Swing und die Jazzkultur verbindet.
 
“Are You Syncopated?! wird kofinanziert durch das Creative Europe Programm der Europäischen Kommission im Rahmen des Projekts Swinging Europe, das 13 europäische Länder zusammenbringt, um das kulturelle Erbe des Swing zu feiern. Wir erwarten Besuchende aus Berlin und dem Ausland, um das Festival zu einem einzigartigen und inspirierenden Erlebnis zu machen.

Meschiya Lake & The New Movement: Looking the World Over.

NEWS | Meschiya is coming for one concert with The New Movement Fr. 30. Sept. at Are You Syncopated?! 2022 in Ballhaus Prinzenallee, Berlin.

Meschiya Lake’s new album “Looking the World Over” is the second collaborative release between Sungroove Records & the Syncopation Society. It has been guarded in the safe for two long years until she teamed up with François Perdriau to complete the process that stopped with the Pandemic, well before the catastrophic collapse of live music, the Black Lives Matter movement and the war in Ukraine. Lots have changed… Yet this album holds a peculiar significance and resonates with our times, perhaps even more so than as initially intended.

The album has been acclaimed received from the German press ( Jazzstetik rated the album ★★★★☆, WESTZEIT and Zeitzeichen have been particularly enthusiastic about the album complimenting both the performance and the song curation). The main songs of the album have also been featured on RBB online, SWR2, Hr2 Kultur, SR2 Kulturradio.

Are You Syncopated?! 2022

That was the first edition of AYS?! – 4 grand nights of music and dance in the realm of early jazz in the greatest respect and acknowledgment of the African-American cultural heritage.

This festival is the largest project of the Syncopation Society. It is a huge get-together of the Berlin music scene with the addition of special guests from abroad. It promotes openness in the discovery of jazz culture and welcomes the swing dance community to experience high-quality bands in an environment suitable for dancing. The activities also include workshops, dance lessons, daytime activities, a kid program, and more.

Syncopation Society Orchestra bei der Fête de la Musique 2021

Das Leben kommt zurück nach Berlin mit vielen spontanen Aktionen draußen. Die Stadt bleibt jedoch vorsichtig und hat eine riesige Website eingerichtet, um die zahllosen Konzerte zu streamen, die am 21. Juni stattfinden. Wir haben uns beworben und wurden angenommen!
Das Konzert findet in Altglienike statt und man kann es ab 16:00 Uhr live auf www.fetedelamusique.de streamen (hier geht’s zum FB-Event). Dies wird die erste Hälfte des BackBeat Jazz Academy Projekts abschließen, um ein großes Finale zu bringen und gleichzeitig eine volle Big Band in Aktion zu zeigen.

Claus Jacobi’s Music Scores.

Wir haben die große Freude und das Privileg, Euch eine umfangreiche Sammlung von Transkriptionen des weltbekannten Spezialisten für traditionellen Jazz, Dr. Claus Jacobi, zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dr. Jacobi und wir teilen die Idee, diese Musik weiter zu vermitteln und er erlaubt uns freundlicherweise, seine Transkriptionen auf unserer Website online zu stellen.

Etwa 700 Titel aus der frühen Zeit des Jazz werden zur Verfügung stehen und sie umfassen unterschiedlichste Besetzungen, vom 3-Stimmigen Frontgesang bis zum Big-Band-Arrangement. Dieses Lebenswerk umschließt fast alle Titel, die den Reichtum dieses breiten Repertoires ausmachen.

Wir werden die Seite regelmäßig mit neuen Stücken ergänzen. Derzeit gibt es Transkriptionen für etwa 30 Titel der Original Dixieland Jazz Band, der King Oliver Creole Jazz Band und der New Orleans Rhythm Kings. Wir bitten zu beachten, dass auf diese unschätzbare Ressource nur durch eine Mitgliedschaft zugegriffen werden kann. Werdet Mitglied der Society, indem ihr ein Konto anlegt!
